Comforting Fall Seasonal Breads from City Bakery


For the fall season, City Bakery Cafe, an Asheville staple for over 10 years, strives to evoke the familiar and comforting feelings of home by using rustic and hearty ingredients. When you contemplate the season, certain ingredients come to mind, such as pumpkin, apples, oatmeal, pecans, walnuts, and cranberries. These flavorful and savory ingredients are ones that we typically like to incorporate into our breads during the autumn season, bringing a little bit of the coziness of home into every bite.

In addition, fresh and savory herbs like sage, rosemary, and thyme are also popular during the season. Thus, we also include these in a variety of our breads at this time of the year. Some of our more popular breads for fall include: Pumpkin Bread with pecans, Sweet Potato Sourdough, Apple Cider Oatmeal, and other breads using dried cranberries and nuts.

Traditionally for the Christmas Season, we make Stollen, which is a German bread filled with almonds and dried fruits soaked in bourbon. The fall and winter season are also times where breads with hearty grains are popular, and our newest edition, the Flax Seed Rye will be well-received as well.

Apple Cider Oatmeal Bread

For our Apple Cider Oatmeal bread, we take apple cider and apple bits from local apple farms straight from Hendersonville, NC. We also incorporate steel cut oats right into the mix, making this loaf a great bread for a snack or breakfast. This bread is best served with a dab of butter or jelly!


Pumpkin Bread

Pumpkin breads are synonymous with the fall season. At City Bakery, we put a twist on traditional pumpkin quick breads. Our loaf is enriched with pumpkin mixed right in, and we add toasted pecans for a nutty crunch. This moist bread is the ultimate fall comfort food.


Pretzel Bread

One of the more popular breads that we launch during the fall season is the Pretzel Bread. Pretzel breads have become increasingly popular over the years. We up the ante with our pretzel bread by adding Lusty Monk Mustard, which we mix right into the dough. An old favorite, we also include milk and butter in the mix as well. With a brown crust and tender texture, this bread makes the most delicious sandwiches.


Who We Are: City Bakery is an independent, family owned company founded in 1999 in Asheville, NC. We strive to produce high quality, fresh breads and pastries for our retail and wholesale customers, and source products from local businesses when possible. We bake a wide variety of breads daily. Specializing in traditional French breads, we form our breads by hand and bake them in a hearth oven. We use as little yeast as possible in order to let our breads rise slowly, which allows them to develop complex flavors and to create well developed loaves in the style of European bakers. City Bakery has been awarded Best of WNC seven years in a row!
