Valentine’s Day is not loved and admired by all, many instead loving to peg it as the “Hallmark holiday” bent on emptying out our pockets.
I think it’s all a matter of perspective. Whether you’re solo or in a relationship, why not show some warm, loving feelings for the good people in your life—yourself included?
My Valentine’s Day go-to? Sweet treats! Luckily for those of us living in Winston-Salem, decadent heart-covered desserts abound. No reservations required.
1. Krispy Kreme Valentine’s Day-inspired Donuts
It’s Valentine’s Day, people; Treat. Yo. Self. If you have a soft spot in your heart for Krispy Kreme (and I don’t know anyone from the Triad who doesn’t), then stop by and check out their adorable, decadent Valentine’s Day treats. Pick up one, two, or a dozen, and treat yourself or, better yet, a friend, a family member, or even your coworkers:
Sprinkled Heart Doughnut: A white iced, heart-shaped doughnut with red, pink and white sprinkles.
Chocolate Iced Heart Doughnut: A chocolate iced, heart-shaped doughnut topped with red drizzle.
Kiss: An “X” shaped doughnut with a tasty white icing and strawberry flavored “X” topping.
Hug: An “O” shaped doughnut with white icing and strawberry flavored “O” topping.
2. Salem Baking Company Chocolate Dipped Sugar Heart Shaped Moravian Cookies
Salem Baking Company is a Winston-Salem institution, and this Valentine’s Day you should gobble up their “whisper-thin” Moravian cookies. Cut into red hearts and dipped in artisan chocolate, they’re the perfect gift for the one you love—or the perfect sidekick to #3…
3. Black Mountain Chocolate Artisan Drinking Chocolate
“Black Mountain is a rustic little town perched among the peaks of the Appalachian Mountains,” it reads on BMC’s website. “It’s where you visit grandma for the holidays—and cut your own Christmas tree. It’s where you played in cool mountain streams on a hot summer day as a child. The pace is slower, and neighbors call each other by name. It’s where people take an honest pride in the quality of their craft. Life is just a bit sweeter up here.”
Luckily, Black Mountain Chocolate just brought their sweetness to downtown Winston-Salem. Pick up chocolate, granola, and more, but this Valentine’s Day we suggest testing out a cup of their rich and creamy Drinking Chocolate, made with real chocolate and not powdery cocoa. Choose from Signature Dark, Cayenne-Cinnamon, or Earl Grey.
4. Tart Sweets’ French Macarons
I should warn you that Tart Sweets’ macarons go fast. While they’re always in store, especially during the holidays, they’re also requested days ahead of time by loyal customers.
You should be safe though. Swing by Tart’s South Hawthorne Road location and grab some macarons for yourself or your loved ones. Check out their freshly made cupcakes, bar cookies, and pound cakes, too!
5. Anything from Camino Bakery
A delicious Winston-Salem establishment since 2011, Camino is known for its warm atmosphere, delicious drinks, and mouthwatering desserts. And on holidays they go all out! I can’t recommend just one.
From almond hearts (normally almond horns) to cheesecakes, cookies, cupcakes, and classic or specialty cakes, any choice is a good choice. Take your treat to go or sit down for a spell and enjoy a hot drink and some excellent people-watching right in the heart of Camel City.
