I was interviewing for jobs in Atlanta during the summer of 2003. It was hot as hell at that time. One day, while interviewing for a search firm, I thought it would be best to wear something a bit comfortable, so I opted for a short sleeve dress shirt under my suit. After a little back and forth with some of the associates there, they had me take my jacket off. Right then, one of the guys blurted out, “What are you doing here? Are you here to fix the copier?” Needless to say, I did not end up working for them. Probably good for both me and that firm.
Over the next 5 years, while I was working for an executive recruiting firm, I would always prep my candidates by telling them that there are really only two types of suits a man should wear to interview, a navy blue suit….or a navy blue suit. Navy is dark enough to be super professional, but not too dark to land you that job at the funeral home. Pair it with a red tie, some brown shoes, and you are good to go. Good luck, and don’t forget to send that thank you note after!
